Domain Setup

DNS records and verification for MX, SPF, DKIM, and DMARC.

1. Add MX records

Mail Exchanger (MX) records direct incoming mail to your provider.

  • Host: @
  • Type: MX
  • Value: your mail server (e.g. fusion.mxrouting.net)
  • Priority: as directed by your provider (lower = higher priority)

2. Publish SPF

Sender Policy Framework (SPF) prevents spoofing. Add a TXT record at @:

v=spf1 mx include:your-provider.example ~all

Never publish more than one SPF record per domain.

3. Publish DKIM

Generate a DKIM keypair in your hosting panel. Publish the public key at selector._domainkey:

v=DKIM1; k=rsa; p=YOUR_PUBLIC_KEY...

4. Add DMARC

Add a TXT record at _dmarc. Start with monitoring policy p=none:

v=DMARC1; p=none; rua=mailto:reports@yourdomain.com

Move to p=quarantine or p=reject only after legitimate mail passes SPF and DKIM.

5. Reverse DNS (PTR)

If you manage your own VPS or dedicated SMTP server, set a PTR record matching your server hostname. Managed providers usually handle this for you.

6. Verify and monitor

DNS changes can take up to 24–48 hours to propagate. Verify with:

dig MX yourdomain.com +short
dig TXT yourdomain.com +short
dig TXT mail._domainkey.yourdomain.com +short
dig TXT _dmarc.yourdomain.com +short

Also use MXToolbox or Mail-Tester for deliverability checks.
